Love Roma is almost too cute. And not the big-eyed, maid-outfit, cat-ear-wearing kind of cute, but in its absolute forthrightness about the ideals of love. If it were any more sweet and heartwarming, we'd be waving our arms singing Kumbayah at a group therapy session. And so it is that the final volume sees our winsome couple fumbling and floating their way towards graduation day, sharing all those ups and downs that teenagers have. With lo-fi art and straight-up dialogue, this series is the most honest of all romances, proudly saying things that most folks find too embarrassing coming out of their own mouths. For that same reason, however, it doesn't suit every taste, lacking the flair and mad plot twists of other love stories. No worries, though: that laid-back attitude is the kind that suits Love Roma just fine.

Now, the cover of this volume might look like an exciting plot development, but the final chapters are hardly what you would call a soaring, climactic arc. Instead, like everything else that's come before, they're an ebb and flow of idyllic scenes and character sketches. The usual fare of school-age romance is covered here—the amusement park, the school festival, the discussion of "adult" things—but filtered as always through the lenses of Hoshino and Negishi's quirky relationship. Who knew that Hoshino could emerge as a groundbreaking character just by voicing every little thought that goes through his head? It's always fun to see his musings on love, but when his train of thought turns towards sex, well, the series takes a very, very interesting turn.

Despite the downfalls of the series, it's still entertaining at times, and when the overdone chaos dies down, there are calm moments in which the characters can bond closer together and learn more about one another's pasts. If anyone wanted to get into Love Hina, the random nature of the series makes it possible to just jump into the series midway through without missing a beat. With three more volumes to go, people who have already started collecting the series should be assured that the episodes do get much better. Besides, every good thing has to have its slumps every once in a while.

As for the dialogue tracks themselves, the Japanese actors perform just as well as they normally do. The chaotic and frantic atmosphere of Hinata Inn is articulated well in their voices, which are able to transition faithfully between sad overtones, angry screaming, and giddy happiness. The English dub, on the other hand, is rather mediocre. The actors themselves perform decently, but the casting is horrendous. Kitsune, with her southern Japan dialect, is cast with a Palmetto Southern voice, which some viewers may find grating to the ears and mind. With bad casting coupled with only-adequate acting, the English dub is as far removed from a Tour de force as possible.

One pleasing aspect of the series that stays true in this volume is the beautiful background work. With gorgeous pastels and almost quasi-Impressionistic landscapes, the backgrounds render the artwork in the series as absolutely beautiful. Just the calm mood that the backgrounds impart gives the series a refreshing air that makes one forget how incoherent the plot actually is. The animation itself is rather choppy though, but considering the characters are always moving so much, it isn't as noticeable as it is when they simply walk down the street. The one nicely animated part of the series is the way the characters' facial emotions change. The transitions between emotions are smooth, and are drawn exceptionally well, enhancing the fast pacing of the series.

Love Hina is one of those series that is able to provide mindless entertainment that is enjoyable to watch either alone or with friends. By the ninth episode, however, all the quirks of the series that made it appealing in the first place are beginning to get very old. It's time for a change. The humor in the series revolves mainly around the slapstick angle of the girls resorting to random bursts of unjustifiable violence. This, unfortunately, stops being funny after a while, and renders some of the girls extremely stupid, hen-pecking, paranoid, and annoying. They don't listen to reason, they have no patience… in short, some of the girls make the viewing experience a truly exasperating one. Another downfall of this volume that decreases the value of the series is the complete lack of coherence or consistency in the plot. While the randomness in the earlier episodes still had a background plot that tied them together, these four episodes are farfetched and outlandish beyond reason. For example, Naru becomes a pop idol in one of the episodes, only to have that incident never to be brought up ever again. With the main element of humor gone, and the story line rendered useless, this volume of Love Hina is one of the worst in the series.

On the upside, there are other aspects of the series that are still able to redeem the quality of this series. One of these is the music. The instrumentals are the same that are used in all the previous episodes, with pleasant melodies and that annoying and unexplained sound effect that always accompanies Su. However, the most pleasing part of the music occurs in the eleventh episode in which Naru becomes a pop idol, along with Shinobu and Motoko. It's fun to be able to listen to a few of the characters sing, especially since they have beautiful voices suited especially well for sugary J-Pop songs and ballads. Thankfully Bandai left the songs alone in the English dub as well, so viewers are spared any potential horror of listening to a swell of dubbed image songs.

Furthermore, the introduction of new characters is weak, as many characters are brought in and very little is done with them. Development-wise, all the characters have rather dull and predictable personalities that seem to all be comprised of stock traits. Nothing in this story seems to be innovative nor does it accomplish any attachment to any of the characters on the reader's part. As easy as stock characters are to use in a story as this, there is little done to develop them beyond their initial stage.

Artistically, the characters are very well drawn, but not much attention is paid to the background, leaving many of the frames with characters that seem to be standing in empty space. All in all, this manga is mediocre at best. Although recomended for ages seven and up, the semi-nudity and bloody death scenes seem to be a little harsh for a seven-year-old. Unfortunately it's too serious for younger readers and too simple for more mature readers, in the end this manga is perhaps only recomendable for children around the ages of ten to fifteen.

Volume one of Shaolin Sisters is a confusing array of action and information, but the action doesn't satisfy and the information fails to answer any questions the reader may have about the characters. And for a martial arts manga, it fails to adequately address the different forms of martial arts that are presented. Each character seems only to have one forte, and the main character occasionally will have one good move, that she will just beat to death trying to use over and over again. It doesn't take long to get sick of Julin and her naïveté. The manga-ka attempts to incorporate drama and humor, but fails to do a very good job of meshing the two. The drama throughout most of the manga seems to be superficial and the use of a super tiny bunny who carries around a first aid kit is just out of place.

Irreverent dialogue is part of Disgaea's comedic charm, and the translation definitely gets that part right. It's fun to see Laharl and Etna go at it, or Adell grumbling about Rozalin's spoiled attitude. Even parody references and gaming lingo are handled well: a cultural glossary in the back is used mostly for explaining various spoofs, including the "episode previews" between chapters. Sometimes it even catches subtle, easy-to-miss jokes! The only hiccup in the dialogue is that it sometimes goes too far trying to be funny—it gets a bit tiring having to put up with the Prinnies saying "dood" all the time. Meanwhile, sound effect translations are done in a very entertaining way, with lettering that matches the Japanese originals in both size and style. A glossy color page in the front also adds a premium touch to this volume.

Although Disgaea 2 has the potential to be entertaining, as shown in the first half of this volume, it backslides into typical RPG territory once the real storyline shows up. Poking fun at fantasy worlds and characters is a good thing—but apparently, that satirical edge has to be sacrificed when trying to juggle a video game plot at the same time. We can only hope for one of the following developments in the next volume: either the plot gets deeper, or the humor picks up again. (Or maybe both!) Anyone can tell a story about a young hero on a quest to vanquish a demon lord, but Disgaea's trademark has always been to tell that story in the most goofy, self-deprecating way possible. Frankly, Adell and his co-stars just aren't being goofy and self-deprecating enough, and that's a big disappointment.

And then the new characters show up. It's understandable for a video game sequel to introduce a new cast, but switching to them halfway through a manga volume—not to mention switching to a whole new storyline—is a disorienting experience. Will Etna's quest to overthrow Zenon ever be resolved? Apparently not, since Adell and Rozalin just take over the story completely. While these two do have a certain charm, with Adell playing the straight man to Rozalin's spoiled-princess act, it's clear that they're just going through the motions of the actual game's plot. They traipse through the forest, meet the action-hero-turned-TV-host Axel, and spend the night with Adell's family after a fruitless day of searching for Zenon. As one can imagine, these generic adventure-quest events don't have the audacity and spark of the book's first half, not even with the wacky anime-parodying "episode previews."

Even the artwork seems to reflect this shift in quality: the first half is a showcase of bold lines and snappy comedic sequences, but once the Veldime storyline kicks in, the visuals become cluttered with adventuring scenes and unfamiliar characters. Hmm, could it possibly be that trying to squeeze in the game's plot is hampering the layouts? Just a thought. The style is constantly high-energy, with characters jumping and running and exploding their way through each scene, often breaking panel borders or switching to super-deformed style. But as mentioned above, the artwork gets pretty cluttered when it's trying to tell the story and look dynamic at the same time. At least the character designs are clean and consistent—there isn't anything too groundbreaking about them (typical RPG fare), but they're easy enough to remember after a chapter or so. Don't be fooled by their childlike looks, though: this one lays it on pretty thick with the fanservice, from Etna's skimpy outfit to Rozalin's ample chest (which does get exposed in a bathtub scene).

It goes without saying that the people most likely to buy a Disgaea manga are the people who have played the Disgaea video games. But that doesn't mean it's inaccessible to "newbs"; in fact, the comedy angle adds an extra layer of appeal to the usual RPG-adventure elements. Much like the original story, Disgaea 2 is all about fantasy heroes and villains bumbling around and making a mockery of the genre. Spoiled demon princesses, washed-up action heroes, and a troupe of befuddled exploding penguins—it's all good fun ... until the silliness wears out. Once that happens, the weakness of the series becomes evident: it's just another good-versus-evil quest with strangely-named characters in funny clothes. Clearly, self-mockery only goes so far.

But how far exactly? About 80 pages or so—that's the point where the pure goofiness ends and the Veldime arc (and hence the start of the actual Disgaea 2 game) begins. Prior to that, the first half of this volume is basically a bridge between the first and second Disgaea games, and because it's completely original content, it gives artist Hekaton a chance to shine. The characters feel more vibrant and outwardly comedic than they ever were in the first Disgaea manga—fallen angel Flonne has her airheaded naïveté pushed to the max, Etna is as much of a firebrand as she ever was, and Laharl reigns supreme with his cocky attitude. The humor works best when it inverts the demon world into a series of goofy sitcom situations—Laharl and Etna arguing over pudding, a court hearing where Etna applies for "Beauty Queen" status (because they don't give out the "Overlord" title, so that's the closest you can get), and Laharl spending a lonely night of gaming because everyone else has left the castle.

Taguchi's art style emphasizes both the noir and gekiga qualities of the storyline. Blood and boobs, to put it in three words of one-syllable each. If you don't like seeing stuff like rape/homicides (over and over and over again), you would be well advised to give this series a wide berth. Also, many of the characters, notably Shogo Kawada and Mitsuko Souma, look a heck of a lot older than third year Japanese junior high students (equivalent to first year of high school in the U.S.). Alas, Tokyopop does a disservice to the profusion of illustrative detail and screen tone that garners negative points when evaluating the art for this review: Although the first volume looks good, the second volume has a picture quality equivalent to a Xerox, and the third volume is so blurry that it's almost hard to justify the $24.99 retail price for this 3-in-1 omnibus at all.

Almost, but not quite. The Battle Royale manga, with its lively adaptation by Keith Giffen, does the original novel that inspired it proud, and it is easy to see why readers on both sides of the Pacific love returning to its lyrical yet terrible dance of adolescent death.

Needless to say, Takami's original novel is brilliant—viscerally affective and flatly unforgettable. The movie is also amazing, for different reasons. So how does the manga stack up to the long, looming shadow of greatness in other mediums? The short answer: Pretty well, thank you very much, and with the stylistic flair of gekiga and/or vintage seinen manga. In fact, those familiar with other iterations of the franchise will be in for a pleasant surprise; particular plot points and background details of the characters differ from other versions—and they do so in an interesting, appealing sort of way that will keep even those who think they've seen Battle Royale before coming back, perhaps in spite of themselves, for more of its patented brand of sexualized violence.

Taken together, the first three volumes of Battle Royale provide an excellent taste of the range thematic and stylistic range that the series has to offer. Things take off quickly, and the game has begun after virtually a single chapter. The large cast of characters, their mutual histories and respective backgrounds, are fleshed out as the manga progresses, by jumping back and forth in time. Shuuya, the hero of the piece, proves pretty true to his original novel incarnation. He is even shown singing a rock'n roll song that is addressed to “Wendy.” This is an allusion to Bruce Springsteen's “Born to Run,” which was, for the author, a key image song while writing the story. Other characters, though, prove quite different, more along the lines of hardboiled noir archetypes than the troubled, desperately wounded adolescents originally conceived. Mitsuko Souma is the most obvious of these…let's just say that the victim becomes the victimizer. Anyway, about half of the forty two members of Class B are deceased by the end of the third volume. Given that the series is complete at fifteen volumes, it seems reasonable to assume that the narrative pace slows down significantly at some point in subsequent installments.

It's this kind of mind-boggling punchline that is My Ordinary Life's stock-in-trade, which works either to its advantage or its detriment, depending on who you ask. To the show's credit, the animators are clearly putting in the work; a later scene involving a wayward morsel of food turns into an all-out, heart-stopping visual barrage worthy of any shonen action blockbuster. Other times, the animation style is less spectacular but still full of personality, with shifts in style and quirky angles that keep the scenes from getting stale (always the greatest danger of a slice-of-life series). Heck, even the background music defies expectations, with a lightly jazz-influenced level of sophistication—listen for it during moments like the fire alarm gag. Come on, how are we supposed to rag on high school sketch comedies being cheap and lazy when the production team actually puts effort into it?

Still, waiting for those punchlines can feel like a chore, and the disconnected storytelling is difficult to follow if one does not pick up on the characters right away. (Robot girl? Kid on a goat? Who of the what now?) But those who have the patience for everday schoolgirl antics—always a polarizing issue—will be rewarded for sticking around.

Yes, it really does become earth-shattering when the she chases after the cat, bumps into a passer-by, and triggers an Akira-esque neighborhood explosion ... that catches Yukko and Mio in the blast.

Clearly, one thing that the newly ratified Tokyo Youth Ordinance Bill has not yet eliminated is impractical, suggestive medieval armor. I guess no one ever screams "Think of the children! Moral panic!" when some huntress garbed in bikini-mail comes crashing through the woods with her longsword. Then again, this series commits far worse transgressions than just violence and improper combat attire—it sets a bad example with its lazy storytelling and shameless genre exploitation. Even worse, it tries to cover it up with loud, effects-laden fight scenes.

Similar in plot to the reprehensible Dog Days, Battle Girls offers another variation on the ordinary-student-sucked-into-historical-adventure formula, except with an all-female cast and a feudal Japanese setting. Meatball-headed schoolgirl Hideyoshi is constantly late for school, always failing tests, and so clumsy that one day she stumbles into a mystical ritual and ends up several centuries in the past. Enter bosomy warrior Oda Nobunaga and her equally shapely aide Akechi Mitsuhide, who rescue Hideyoshi from certain death and try to figure out what to do with her. A predictable culture-shock routine follows, with the warriors gawking over this tool of witchcraft called a "cell phone," while Hideyoshi wonders where all the modern amenities like flush toilets and train stations are. In other words, this series manages to go double-cliché by genderbending Japanese history (last year's Samurai Girls got there sooner) and then chucking a kid from the modern era into it.

When the time comes for serious storytelling, however, this episode reverts right back to mediocrity: Teppei enlists the Sket Dan's help in a bullying situation, so they prowl about trying to solve the case, and a surprise revelation leads to the one well-animated sequence in this episode—a fight scene where Onihime lays the smack down. Overall, though, the presentation suggests nothing more than mundane school tales of "they did this and then they did this and it was kind of cool and funny."

Not that it's outright bad or anything—the slick character designs and solid color palette are good enough. The animation, which shoulders the not-terribly-challenging burden of depicting everyday school life, is good enough. Even the mainstream rock soundtrack that punctuates moments of action is good enough. But in a medium that's supposed to take us on wild flights of imagination, is "good enough" really ... good enough?

Episode 1 sets the bar low right away with bespectacled everyman Teppei Sugihara transferring into his new school. Clichés don't get much more banal than this—unless they also involve a school club trying to recruit the newcomer. That role falls to the Sket Dan (a pun on the Japanese verb for "to help"), an eccentric trio committed to assisting students in need. It's these three, with their funny nicknames and equally funny personalities, that are the heartbeat of the show: goggle-headed ringleader Bossun, hockey-stick-toting enforcer Onihime, and the laptop-carrying, Stephen-Hawking-voiced Switch. Just stick those three in a room and watch the jokes fly!

Like with the first volume, Extras this time include clean opener and closer and an English audio commentary, this time for episode 7. It features line producer Tyler Walker, script writer (and voice of the Devil) Chuck Huber, and R. Bruce Elliott, the voice of Szilard, who spend a healthy chunk of the time talking about the accents and distinctive vocal styles that went into the recording process.

Baccano! has yet to explain exactly what did happen to Dallas Genoard or how exactly so many of the 1930s cast members ultimately wound up becoming immortal, but the puzzle of how things came to be the way they are in the first episode is gradually coming together and the path the series is taking to get there is a highly enjoyable one. Its plethora of converging story threads, combined with the antics of Isaac and Miria, make this “ruckus” such a fun view that these four episodes just seem to fly by. In this case, that's a grand compliment.

This premise borrows plenty from its science-fiction forebears, but Episode 1 still mixes things up enough to be a brain-tickling delight. The deceptive storytelling creates a neat little guessing game of imagination versus reality and past versus present (or future?), while the characters' odd personalities give them an intriguing, dark-edged quality. That edge is also bolstered visually by a shadowy color palette, striking camera angles, and animation that's polished enough to present the "normal world" and then subtly start adding abnormalities to it. The sparse, dissonant background music also reinforces this unsettling mood.

It would be nice, though, if Okabe stopped ranting and raving about "the Organization" (an actual cabal of stereotypical cackling villains, or just a spoof thereof?), and if the episode hadn't wasted so much time on the Future Gadget club's day-to-day activities. But as a suspense-filled head trip, this one definitely has promise.

Anime adaptations of visual novels would probably get a better rap if more of them were like Steins;Gate, a psychological thriller from the same studio that gave us Chaos;HEAd a few years back. Although both series are mind-benders designed to mess with one's perception of reality, Steins;Gate goes one further, invoking ideas of time travel and even name-dropping famed Internet weirdo John Titor. Are you ready to have your mind messed with? Then let's go.

Steins;Gate centers around Rintarou Okabe (alias Ryouma Hououin), a self-declared mad scientist who runs the so-called Laboratory of Future Gadgets (but is really just a cozy geek hangout). Okabe's adventure begins when he visits Akihabara to hear a lecture from a supposed time-machine inventor. After Okabe ditches the lecture, however, strange things start to happen: he discovers a fellow researcher's bloody corpse while exploring the halls, city crowds briefly disappear while he's crossing the street, and a satellite crashes into the building that he was just in. But when Okabe tries to discuss these events with others, their conflicting accounts begin to puzzle him. Only after comparing text messages does he realize: did he just experience some kind of time-slip?

Meiko gets into Keio but Touma does not, due to a cold Urara had given him shortly before. Although he did not make it, he pretends he does to earn the respect of Meiko. Touma is caught up in a love triangle with Urara and Meiko, while struggling to keep Meiko believing he's really a Keio student and still be there for Urara at the same time.

If poorly split story arcs seem like such a crime, though, just remember that there are far worse things ... like generic episodic content. Yes, the middle chapters feature yet another hot girl who's interested in Tsukune, and she's not even particularly appealing: this one's just a play on the "socially awkward stalker who does really creepy things for romantic attention" stereotype. Sure, there's a bit of a twist to the end of this story, but even that is based on a prefabricated plot element, and in the end, Tsukune walks out of the whole mess with another overeager female friend. Wow, didn't see that one coming.

The final chapter also revives the other half of the tired old boy-meets-girl formula: jealous guys who want to beat up Tsukune. For most of the chapter, it looks like the usual deus ex machina where Moka or Tsukune activate their vampire powers and fend off the menace, but at the last moment it shows some promise by revealing the shades of darkness that lurk in Tsukune's body. If this marks the start of another dramatic story arc, that would be a very welcome plot development after the dullness of the past few chapters.

What a conventional conclusion does offer, however, is conventional emotional closure. In the case of Makoto's psychoses that can feel a little contrived, but in the case of Taro and Miyako's terrifyingly cute relationship it's a lot more satisfying than something ambiguous or ambitious would have been. Indeed, for all the varied and eerie stylization of Production I.G's sleekly simplified visuals, it is this last and most conventional of scenes, as Miyako's face runs the gamut from fearful resignation to tearful joy, that lingers on in the mind's eye. And Nakamura's masterful soundscapes, crawling with distorted sounds and displaced audio and electronic tics that barely qualify as music, can make something weird and disquieting even of the series' most unimaginative sequences. The occasional cheap visual (chocolate-syrup landslide anyone?) or cheap plot development is a lot easier to forgive, and sometimes perfectly effective, when the series' fragmented audio is crawling up and down your spine.

As if having the OVA series and the movie on one disc wasn't enough, this DVD has a couple more nice extras. The best would have to be the "Mobile Suit Encyclopedia" which gives a short history and armament details for all the Gundams and mobile suits that appear in Endless Waltz. Next up is the picture gallery that contains five very nice images, these aren't just screen caps from the movie either, these are original pictures, very nice. If only there were more than 5. The last extra is of course the textless endings, what DVD would be complete without these? Unfortunately a lot of DVDs are coming out without the textless openings and ending these days, but Bandai has been nice enough to include the textless endings from the OVA series, there are no textless openings because there are no openings so to speak, each episode starts with the narrator providing some back history. There are only two of these as the first two episodes have the same ending, the third OVA episode has the same music as teh first two but the animation is taken from the movie's added footage.

Menus on this DVD are easy to navigate and load fast, but it can be a little difficult at times to see where the cursor is (There is no cursor, menu items become highlighted when selected). All in all, with the addition of the very nice animation and good background music, these are probably Bandai's best DVD menus to date.

Every hero has an origin story. Yes, even ones starring in joke-a-minute screwball comedies. It may be easy to think of Hayate Ayasaki simply as a super-talented everyman trying to make it in a zany world, but even he must have gotten his combat skills and butler training from somewhere—and at last Hayate the Combat Butler tells us where. The extended flashback that occupies two-thirds of this volume, and spills right over into the next one, is the series' most ambitious arc yet—and one that Kenjiro Hata had envisioned from the very beginning. Certainly the flashback arc is a dramatic change of pace, and proves that Hata is more than just a one-joke (or twenty-joke) artist. But is he talented enough to pull it off?

Before embarking upon that challenge, this volume warms up with a handful of typical Hayate chapters—quick, stand-alone situations that spiral into the series' usual brand of nonsense. These work better when there is some kind of pop-cultural context to work from, like when the first chapter does its spoof-take on scary movies (and sensitive viewers who shouldn't be watching them), or when Nagi's desire to get a picture taken with Hayate becomes a 16-page riff on photography geeks. The comedic highlight, though, is definitely Hayate getting roped into a live-action sentai skit and somehow being implicated in some Power Ranger yaoi (thankfully, nothing ever comes of it). By contrast, the chapter where side character Sakuya goes in search of a maid is far less effective, as airing one's complaints in a Kansai accent quickly wears out its welcome.

After 60-odd pages of lightweight patter, things finally get down to serious business with the dramatic "End of the World" arc. Although Hata's imagination is already on constant overdrive from making Gundam jokes and throwing Hayate into improbable situations, this is the first time he has actually focused it so intently on a single subject. The result is a flashback that seems to exist in its own unique fantasy world—and in a way it does, with never-before-seen locations, a brand-new character, and emotions that are unusually weighty and complex for a series like this. The plot, however, is nothing terribly special: a young Hayate experiences his first love, has to decide how much he really likes this girl, and every few pages insists on reminding us that the story has a tragic ending. The flashback gets so drawn-out and self-indulgent that it cuts off midway and forces readers to wait for a conclusion in Volume 18, so while Kenjiro Hata gets points for sheer ambition and the series' change of mood, the cumbersome execution shows that bittersweet childhood romance is not his natural area of skill.

The artwork also puts a limit on the expressive capabilities of the flashback arc, with the simple character designs and sometimes stiff poses more suited to comedy manga than works of heartbreaking gravity. Although the bug eyes, giant heads and spindly limbs of young Hayate and Athena are supposed to indicate their age, they end up calling more attention to the characters' awkward proportions than anything else, and the tendency toward static dialogue scenes shows that even Hata himself may not have felt entirely confident drawing them. There is, at least, more effort put into the backgrounds—the interiors of Athena's castle are wonderfully ornate and grand in scope—but even then there are signs of photo-referencing and software-aided modeling. At least in the stand-alone comedy chapters, the lack of artistic finesse is not as glaring, as the pure absurdity and energy of each situation tends to cover up for visual shortcomings.

Speaking of pure absurdity, the zippy one-liners and pop-culture tangents of the first few chapters continue to be a key part of the series' humor—from Nagi's over-the-top disgust when she stumbles upon an explicit DVD at the video store to the sudden outbreak of photography snobbery when Hayate and friends compare cameras. Yet for all the vitality that is poured into these lines (as well as the translation), it is when the dialogue restrains itself in the flashback arc that the script becomes even more effective. When Hayate and Athena discuss their feelings, they do so in broad, simple terms, just like real kids do—and not like other romantic protagonists who have a bad habit of sounding ten years older than they really are. This storyline is clearly the one closest to Hata's heart, and in writing it he brings out the spirit of young, innocent love. In fact, while caught up in the dialogue, one almost misses that all other text elements like street signs and sound effects have also been edited seamlessly into English.

So at last begins the origin story of this particular hero—the one who can make a cup of tea just as effectively as he can land a drop kick. It only took 17 volumes to get there, but for those who consider themselves faithful fans of Hayate the Combat Butler, consider it a reward for sticking around this long: after all the series' ups and downs, the furious battles and slapstick madness, it's time to get serious about matters of the heart. However, a manga-ka who's spent so long working mostly on slapstick madness is not entirely equipped to tell weepy romantic stories—the story is an extremely basic puppy-love tragedy, and the limited artistic technique will leave most eyes unimpressed. So while Kenjiro Hata does not entirely succeed, he can at least say he tried. Which is admirable enough in itself.

When the bombast finally arrives, though, this series can hold its own against any of the genre's more traditional offerings: herds of animals go berserk, entire city districts are enveloped in chaos, and Hikaru stretches her powers to their limits as she tries to save a classmate and later her aunt. At the same time, the presence of the Moderator brings a cerebral element to the situation—let's stop and talk about the future of life on Earth and the meaning of "macro-evolution" while the world is exploding around us, shall we? It's during those breaks in the action, when Hikaru is trying to make sense of the madness, that the series provides its most nourishing food for thought: that these aliens are not just invaders, but forces that control the very order of the universe. Not that they would want to be labeled gods, per se ... but the point is there, for those who dare approach it.

But enough of digging into the core meaning of this story. At the very surface, the experience is just as rewarding, with Tadano's artwork effortlessly bridging the gap between mundane happenings and fantastical, near-impossible scenarios. The early scenes depicting Hikaru's day-to-day life—at school, at home, and in the city—are distinctively slice-of-life, with lots of straight-on views and carefully drawn (even photo-referenced) backgrounds. But keep on reading, and Tadano's flair for the dramatic starts to manifest itself: grotesque hybrid creatures are drawn in as much detail as the idyllic scenes that preceded them, and when Hikaru enters battle mode, acrobatic angles and cascades of superpowered effects come into play. While the creature designs are far more interesting the human characters, the Moderator's classical Grecian beauty is a particular stroke of cleverness: the alien being casts itself as "the ideal human," something made in the (traditional Western) image of God. More than just a design choice, it also reflects the provocative message that underlies the story.

Like any good mystery series, the second volume of Madlax piques the viewer's interest by providing tantalizing clues about the nature of some established mysteries while raising an entirely new batch of questions. Peeks into the pasts of both lead characters strongly suggest an early traumatic connection in Gazth-Sonika that neither remembers, while they have a tenuous current connection via the strange and mystical Elies text. (Margaret's book is missing a page, you see, while Madlax has a single page with the exact same script. . . Coincidence?) But the story isn't just about the two leads. Some of the truths about key side characters, especially the maid Elenore, and their roles in the grand scheme of things are revealed, too. It also becomes apparent that incidences which appeared to be stand-alone stories in the first volumes may, in fact, be integral parts of the greater storyline. Everything in the story so far seems to connect back to some pivotal event which happened twelve years ago in Gazth-Sonika which changed the face of the country and set all the important characters down the paths they now follow. But what happened which was so dire that it triggered a civil war, and how were Margaret and Madlax involved? Hints are dropped about some kind of plane crash, but details are short. By the end of the volume viewers who let themselves get wrapped up in these mysteries will find themselves salivating to learn more and eagerly anticipating the next volume, a reaction which wasn't as strong (if present at all) after the end of the first volume.

Female character designs continue to be sharp and appealing, while those for male characters are more generic. Though Madlax still looks sexy, it's not emphasized as much in the artistry of this volume as it was in the first volume. Background artwork continues to be well-done, though its integration with characters is a little spotty. Sound and animation are also both very well-done, with minor uses of CG effects to spruce up a couple of scenes. The musical scoring, which sounds like a mix of Noir and .hack//SIGN, generally is effective at setting the tone for the series and individual scenes, though there are some minor inconsistencies. The opener and closer are unchanged.

The performances in the English dub take slightly different approaches to highlighting the personality traits of various characters when compared to the Japanese vocals. Because of this, Madlax sounds a bit more airheaded, and Margaret more distinctly flighty, than the way they come across in the Japanese vocals. This is not completely out of character for either, and the performances do work when evaluated solely on their own merits, but they have enough stylistic differences with the original Japanese performances that they may bother purists. The rest of the dub performances, nearly all done by ADV regulars, are competent but not especially noteworthy. The English scripting stays reasonably tight to the subtitles.

Extras on this volume include ADV's increasingly-standard preview of the next volume, company previews, clean opener and closer, design sketches, and Japanese promo spots. As with the first volume, the highlight extra is “Conversations With SSS,” a substantial collection of alternate English dialogue outtakes featuring the voice of SSS and a rotating array of second characters set against clips and still shots. As with a similar feature on Geneon's production of Texhnolyze, these aren't bloopers but scripted comedy routines. Though one of them (a clear rip-off on the Hollywood movie Phone Booth) goes on a bit too long, nearly all are funny. The Staff Talk in the liner notes this time includes some cartoonish panels by production personnel with comments translated in footnotes—a rather odd extra.

With volume 2 Madlax refocuses itself on its mystery elements, becoming a more involving story than it was at first. It still has not escaped the shadow of its predecessor Noir, which it continues to mimic in many ways, though it does add in a couple of new elements. Whether or not the series will ultimately be able to establish its own identity still remains to be seen, but it's good enough to merit a regular recommendation for general audiences and a strong recommendation for fans of “girls with guns” titles.

While sometimes over-the-top, Matt Greenfield's directorial style is right at home here. The first episode is blisteringly slapstick, and the twisted, absurd, and hillarious English rewrite is among the best ever written. Geneon's production of this volume does offer five episodes but only a textless closer and an art insert for Extras. Their ambitious plan to release future volumes every six weeks has, unfortunately, fallen afoul of their financial woes, but at least this volume did make it out before their November 1st shutdown. Unlike some other September and October Geneon releases, this volume won't leave fans hanging; if the series has to go on hiatus for awhile, after episode 10 is the ideal place to do it.

Story of Saiunkoku is not without its flaws. Its humor does not always smoothly integrate with its more serious content and it never completely shakes its inclination to fall back on typical romantic comedy hijinks, a problem which keeps it from establishing itself as something wholly different from other shojo-leaning fare. These episodes also occasionally get too talky, with lengthy speeches overly relied on to convey information. Great visuals, a respectable female lead, interesting characters, a solid musical score, good use of narration, and no shortage of plot balance out such deficiencies, however, leaving the overall evaluation of this very pretty series strongly on the plus side.

One point needs to be brought up first: the blurb on the case lists the “peaceful theocracy” with the Simoun as Simulacrum, while throughout the subtitles the name “Kyuukoku” is consistently used instead. Argentum, the name used for the industrialized attacking nation in advertisements, gets replaced by “Shoukoku” in the subtitles. In both cases the subtitle name is the one consistent with the original spoken Japanese, so apparently Media Blasters' advertising and production people are not on the same page on translating (or not) the names. Hopefully this will get straightened out with future volumes.

That aside, there seems to be a rule in anime that sci fi stories with prominent yuri (i.e. lesbian) content have to involve either sex changes or single-gender planets. Simoun has both for good measure. It unabashedly advertises itself as a yuri series, and indeed it does deliver a substantial quota of girl-girl relationships and especially girl-girl kissing, since kisses between Pairs are apparently an activation requirement for the Simoun. The gender-change-by-choice potential does throw a new wrinkle into the scheme, as you now can wind up with literally-meant statements like “I'm going to be a man for her” in a relationship between two teenage girls; the ultimate statement of commitment, perhaps?

In the end, despite its qualities, Bubblegum Crash is a failure. It completely fails to do what it set out to do, or what it should have set out to do, to complete Crisis. Fans of Bubblegum Crisis will want to watch Crash, just to see more of the series, but they absolutely should not go into this show expecting to see a quality conclusion to the original. Those that have yet to experience any part of the Bubblegum universe should watch either Bubblegum Crisis or Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. The original is for viewers that want a raw, powerful and emotion driven show, 2040 is for those that want a story with a clear beginning, middle and ending that wraps up every loose end. Crash, is only for those of us that want more.

Director Shinji Ushiro and voice actress Asami Imai (Chelsea) were special guests of Friday's Nico Nico Live Hōsō program. The 12th and final television episode aired earlier this month.

SuperGALS! is a must-see for those who like shows where the characters are the most important part of the show. There are no major storylines or evil plots, just some girls looking to live their lives to the fullest and not compromise who and what they are. Heavy of the comedy, SuperGALS! manages to mix in elements of drama to keep the story moving. Volume two shines with its comic hijinks and heartfelt moments. SuperGALS! is the epitome of something different. It's hard to pigeonhole this series with all the elements present. Simply put, you just have to get this series to enjoy it for yourself.

How does a manga-ka get away with crafting an entire 6-chapter, 208-page volume of manga without ever showing or even mentioning his title character once?

Apparently it's possible if your name is Yukito Kishiro, you have that important a chunk of backstory to tell, and you have a sufficiently interesting side character on whom to center it.

Volume 9 continues Alita's flashback into the life of her former vampire foe Caerula Sanguis (aka Vilma), in the process revealing why Kishiro has bothered to put so much effort into detailing the story of one of Alita's defeated foes and why it should matter to BAA devotees to read it: in a very real sense Caerula's story is also the foundation of the present. As shown here, her actions in the past played an instrumental role in bringing about the state of affairs that exists in Alita's current time. Before this volume is over we get to see the founding of Tiphares, Melchizedek, and the city that would become Scrap Yard, how the woman who would become Caerula ended up with the Fata Morgana, and why a centuries-old vampire would bother to be involved with an organization like the Stellar Nursery.

There comes a time in some animators' lives when they realize that the only way to enjoy working on a lame show is to stop taking it so seriously. Maybe that's what happened in Star Ocean EX, where an entire episode is devoted to a comical giant robot rampage (plus some recaps), and the snappy exchanges between characters become more entertaining than the epic battles they get into. This adaptation of the hit video game continues to lack any semblance of originality, pulling out every cliché it can think of. Outside of the main quest, however, there's some light comedy that brightens up an otherwise dull series. Maybe there's some hope yet.

If you were hoping that this is the point in the series where it gets better, well, don't get too excited. With colorful characters entering left and right, it might get more entertaining, but it doesn't necessarily get better. Fantasy clichés never seem to run out in this quest-driven world: if it isn't about magical cure-all herbs, it's about the master swordsmith's prized blade, or the old adversary coming back to challenge the hero. The characters may act all surprised and dramatic when a plot twist happens, but anyone else watching the show will probably just groan. At least our heroes don't take themselves too seriously: Precis's robot rampage is the height of comedy on this disc, and while it's not high art, the sheer energy shows the animation staff having fun for once. (And hey, some lucky artist got to draw Rena as a race queen.)

The background music demonstrates the versatility of the piano as it becomes the main instrument in expressing just about every mood from jolly hijinks to tenderness to anger and fear. Although other instruments (mostly of the synthesized kind) join in regularly, it's still the piano that brings out the most effective passages. Of course, "effective" is a relative term, and most of the music here is just fragmented units of melody and harmony when compared against the best music scores in anime. It's enough to accompany the simple story presented here, but no more than that.

Like other aspects of the show, the English dub is just about average, with Claude sounding like a typical hero, Ashton playing the comedy relief, and high-pitched Precis compelling viewers to switch the audio language—until they realize she's even whinier in Japanese. The cast approaches their characters as RPG stereotypes rather than real people, which makes sense considering the material. At least they put on a natural tone of voice. Helping with this natural sound is a script that plays it loose when it comes to colloquialisms and dialogue. Star Ocean loyalists may be aghast at some of the differences between the dubbed script and the subtitles, but in a story that's this clichéd, you might as well have some fun. That's exactly what happens in the dub as characters quip and adlib their way through some surprisingly witty exchanges.

It's always a little sad when a potentially cool concept is brought to its knees due to sloppy execution. Speed Grapher, Gonzo's latest attempt at a show aimed exclusively at adults, starts out with what might have been a cool idea – a gruff photographer infiltrates the core of a corrupt high society – and quickly veers into being an exercise in over-the-top silliness that's impossible to take seriously even though clearly the show is asking you to do just that.

Watching the storyline unfold in the first four episodes included on this disc is an interesting experience; your eyes will have slowly rolled all the way back into your head by the time the fourth episode ends. Here's the story so far: in a corrupt, dystopian future Tokyo, tough guy photographer Saiga infiltrates a secret underground club where the richest of the rich can satisfy their most dangerous desires for an astronomical price.

Iwasaki's light, upbeat tone does make the intrigue and frequent battles seem oddly inconsequential, an impression exacerbated by his flat action staging, and it also robs the darker turns that the plot takes—including a couple of dastardly betrayals and one shockingly sudden death—of their impact. But the failure of the plot as an adventure is secondary to its success as a romance. With his sarcastic spunk and unapologetic interest in the opposite sex, Saito makes a good foil for the aggressive, prideful, and surprisingly sympathetic Louise, their rapport equal parts attraction, growing mutual respect, and violent personality clash. The series' fantasy setting, though jokey, is fully integrated into the overall romance (Louise and Saito's bond as Master and Familiar is central to their relationship) and even the obligatory love triangle is genuinely workable, with Siesta sharing a viable, and far less volatile, chemistry with Saito. And as the series progresses, the silly magical hijinks and comically abusive relationships give way to an appropriately romantic second half that, thanks to Louise's ferocity and Saito's matter-of-factness, never grows syrupy and isn't afraid to let its characters commit.

Replicating the success of Rie Kugiyama's unabashedly fetishistic Louise and Satoshi Hino's blithely confident Saito is no easy task. Of the English leads, Cristina Valenzuela is the more fortunate, as Louise has Eiji Usatsuka's blindingly cute design to fall back on. Valenzuela also has the good sense to tone down Louise's wilder swings, creating a slightly more mature variation on the character. Saito, on the other hand, is hobbled with a sadly generic design, leaving him entirely dependent on his actor. And unfortunately Jonathan Meza makes the fatal mistake of playing him with a quavering loser edge, effectively destroying his unflappable charm. Iwasaki is a veteran of romantic comedies (part of the reason, no doubt, that his action direction is so poor), but the little jolts of poignancy he teases from Louise and Saito's evolving relationship cannot survive a toned-down Louise and a dispiritingly limp Saito. Nicholas Manelick picks up some of the slack with his hilariously ham-handed take on womanizing self-aggrandizer Guiche, and most of the other supporting players are solid enough, but a romance drained of its chemistry is too sad a thing to be saved by humor.

Less crucial is Shinkichi Mitsumune's score, which is far more remarkable for its ability to keep out of the way (even when running on all cylinders) than it is for its musical qualities. It's the sonic equivalent of J.C. Staff's generic fantasy-world settings: pleasant, and in some cases downright pretty, but hardly a draw unto itself.

With its strong male lead, adorably sadistic romantic interest and definite romantic progression, it's little wonder that The Familiar of Zero spawned two sequels. Other than Kyoto Animation's coolly stylish romances and the occasional harem tripe, fans of the male side of romance have had little to dig their teeth into of late, so Zero comes at an opportune time. It may lack the complexity and emotional depth of the best romances, but even if it isn't as meaty as one would like, it's tasty enough—and towards the end, surprisingly filling.

Years ago, a research project in the Middle East went awry when a scientist-turned-terrorist named "Enkidu" unleashed catastrophe on the world. But don't go condemning this one to the cliché pile just yet. Although monster-battling and psychic powers are a necessary part of the story, they're not the main focus here as with typical schoolboy romps. This is a mystery first and an adventure second, as evidenced by the number of dialogue scenes and cautious explorations. Tatsuya and Kiyoko want to know what's going on, and they're going to keep asking people until they find out. Tatsuya uses his powers maybe once per episode—and when he does, it's always by accident, since he's in no mood to be come a sprightly shounen hero just yet. In fact, none of the characters are outspoken, and when they raise their voices it's only out of shock or fear. This uneasy mood makes Gilgamesh the quiet antidote to wild post-apocalyptic tales where explosions tell the story. In contrast, it's the urge to understand Enkidu's mysteries that drives the plot here.

Few shows can make a strong first impression on visuals alone, but this is one that does, and that's without flashy multimillion-dollar CGI. The character designs are unlike anything else in modern anime—boldly drawn with staring eyes, strongly defined features, and thick hair. Against the dim, carefully shaded backgrounds, the characters' vivid (but never cheerful) colors stand out even more. The animators also get a brief chance to show off traditional Mesopotamian artworks, bringing yet another culture into the cosmopolitan world of anime illustration. The animation itself isn't particularly striking, as most of the series so far involves static situations and slow movements, but it never falls into the realm of cheap or lazy. The few action scenes that do come up are exciting enough, although this series looks cooler when the characters are just standing around looking creeped out, rather than rampaging in battle.

Fate/stay night is a reviewer's dream. Not because it's indisputably great (or deliciously bad), but because its pros and cons can be boiled down to one of each: a surfeit of atmosphere and a dearth of involvement. To be sure, there are other positive and negative aspects—the historical hook of the Servants for instance—but the vast majority of these first four episodes falls into one category or the other.

The spooky atmosphere of supernatural menace is largely the achievement of the show's more technical elements, with some help from the script (nothing keeps you on edge like a show that kills its protagonist at least once in the opening set of episodes). All of the visuals are cued towards replicating this atmosphere: the proliferation of empty nighttime settings; the perpetually slanting sunlight and long, deep shadows; scenes that suddenly shift crimson as if filtered through blood; even the striking, sometimes frightening Servants in their eye-catching, fanciful costumes. The size of the budget (large) gives everything an extra boost, particularly during the kinetic combat scenes in which the Servants demonstrate their lethal capabilities (once Saber begins moving, it's easy to believe that, with the right Master, she could indeed be the most powerful of all). Underscoring everything is Kenji Kawai's haunting, subdued soundtrack. Ranging from simple, creepy melodies to borderline ambient noise, and peppered with pseudo-religious choral chants, and fragile, wordless arias wreathed in empty-cathedral echoes, it permeates important scenes until they ooze quiet dread. And everything unfolds at a deliberate pace (Saber doesn't make her grand entrance until the end of the second episode) that perfectly mirrors the overall atmosphere.

But, other than the meticulously established atmosphere, there's little in these first four episodes that engages or involves. How could you not like a cast whose lead aspires to become a "Champion of Justice"? Well, start by making him as dull as ditchwater. Then pair him with a female lead whose most salient features are an abrasive surface and an inexplicable soft spot for the limp lead (that will inevitably be expounded upon later). And then sprinkle it liberally with an assortment of female stereotypes from ye ol' anime vat-o-romantic-rivals (the subservient doormat who cooks for the main character, the outgoing best-friend athlete girl). Yuck. The only spices in the mix are the Servants (mainly Archer and Saber) who owe their appeal as much to their air of mystery and delicious visual representation as to any inherent personality traits. Character-building scenes of everyday life, due to the characters' total lack of magnetism, bog the story down, occasionally transforming the pace from "deliberate" to "dull;" a process that is greatly abetted by clunky exposition-laden dialogue, and long rule-establishing info-dumps. It isn't entirely devoid of narrative interest—the introduction of Saber to Shirou's household promises to stir things up a bit—but it is hardly enough to retain one's interest throughout the entirety of the volume.

Geneon's dub does a creditable job of transferring the show into English. Most of the casting choices are dead-on, and the script is very faithful to the original, straying just enough to keep the English dialogue from becoming any more unwieldy than the Japanese dialogue is. The script even retains some Japanese honorifics (e.g. Fuji-nee and sempai). To fault the English cast for their toned-down delivery and the unconvincing dialogue is to fault them for creative choices made by the series' creators.

Extras are sparse on this disc: a cursory collection of character artwork, and a textless version of the opening, a welcome addition as it allows an unobstructed view of the quality visuals that accompany the unremarkable (if appropriately downbeat) opening song. No textless closing is provided for the more memorable closer (memorable more for the coordination of music and visuals—a slow, single backward dolly—than for the music itself).

A combination of superb atmosphere and failed characterization, Fate/stay night is the very definition of a mixed bag. With any luck, the characters will grow over the next 20 episodes; it would be a shame to waste the obvious effort that went into drawing, animating and scoring of this dark fantasy. Perhaps once there is no more info to be dumped there will be enough time—and enough quality writing—to actually invest oneself in the story and characters.

Yoko Kanno's music score matches the mood shift in this volume of Stand Alone Complex, going for more subtle orchestration and avoiding vocal songs in the background. There's a bit too much reliance on strings, and some of the tracks are clearly being recycled from earlier use, but it still helps to build the suspense the drives most of the show. Kanno even lays off the electro-rock beats, using them only occasionally, and the result is a score that's quieter but still evocative.

Those looking for emotional impact and character development won't find much in this volume, though. Its focus on top-notch sleuthing and Aramaki's clever tactics leave little room for matters of the heart. Even lead characters like Kusanagi and Batou simply serve as agents, hunting down the criminal suspects that are the true focus of each stand-alone episode. However, Togusa takes charge in Episode 20, and the scenes with his family—who haven't had much screen time until now—help to develop our sympathy for the one guy in Section 9 who's more human than cyborg. This series also seems a bit colder ever since the Tachikomas got sent back to the lab for repairs; there just isn't the same spark without the chirpy blue tanks. Let's hope they make a comeback in the final six episodes.

Production I.G doesn't get much of a chance to show off their color palette this time around, with building interiors and gloomy conditions being the main setting. Although there are some eye-catching scenes like the nighttime car chase in Episode 19, the artwork comes out slightly duller than in previous installments of the series. The animation is as smooth and crisp as ever, with carefully rendered characters as well, but the emphasis on dialogue and snooping around means that action scenes are a rarity. When they do happen, the camera angles and perspectives bring out plenty of energy; Togusa's gunfight in Episode 20 is a strong example of how well-orchestrated action can be full of life even when placed against dark, gloomy backgrounds.

As always, the English dub of Stand Alone Complex is a prime example of voice acting done right, and William Knight's moment in the spotlight as Aramaki proves that sounding like an old man doesn't have to be comically exaggerated. However, some of the secondary characters disrupt the quality, particularly the bank president's stiff performance in Episode 17. Meanwhile, the extras on this disc are a goldmine for animation nerds—the interview with photography and 3-D directors Koji Tanaka and Makoto Endo is a remarkable insight into the digital animation process. (Who needs cels anyway? Everything's done on computers these days!) The mechanical designers also talk about their role in the show, explaining how props like guns, cars and even cell phones must strike a careful balance between present-day technology and Masamune Shirow's vision of the future.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex continues to be the series of choice for intelligent, high-quality anime. Volume 5 takes a more low-key approach, limiting the amount of flashy effects and action scenes, but the masterful detective work and reasoning of Aramaki is a highlight in itself. With the Laughing Man saga beginning to enter its final stages, and storylines that are worth the mental challenge, this is one DVD that belongs on your shelf—right there with the previous four volumes.

The question going into this set is whether the series can maintain that perfection: its honesty, potency, and indeed plain old excellence. Firing on all cylinders for fifty episodes isn't easy to do, and all twelve episodes (well, eleven if you discount the recap) pass with the expectation that the show will trip up somewhere, will somehow flop, fall flat or at least stumble or slip. Even if just momentarily. But it never does. One wonderfully formed scene after another the series does nothing but impress. If the previous set was falling in love with a series you know will break your heart, this is the series breaking your heart. Nearly every scene glitters with telling little touches that open foggy windows into the hearts of its protagonists, while pointing the way towards swelling changes that wash with tide-like regularity through their lives. A parking-lot confrontation where Hachi's heart shatters like glass only to reform into something even more unyielding; a concert where music sets free a torrent of repressed emotion; a late-night tryst driven by a toxic upwelling of self-loathing—again and again the series builds to moments that sear themselves into the memory, and every time their power and unsparing realism comes as a surprise.

Even as the series prepares itself to tear your heart out and dance a high-heeled polka on it, it is shining a light through the bewilderingly familiar prism of its characters' personalities. Starkly exposed is both the fragility and the self-reproach that bubble beneath Hachi's blithe self-interest. Briefly glimpsed are the doubt and need that NANA hides behind her brash front. Compassion buds in Hachi, twisted by her self-absorption, just as appreciation buds in NANA, twisted by dependence. The two intertwine, the layers of each personality complementing the other's in ways both healing and imperiling. It's a dance of personalities as delicate as it is powerful, and hands-down the greatest achievement in a series crowded with them.

DVD 7: The Shadow
There are lots of great little touches sprinkled throughout this series, but the whole is less than the sum of its parts. The show can't decide if it's an action/comedy or a parody of action/comedies, and has one foot firmly planted in both. Given Gatekeepers' reheated premise it probably should have gone straight for parody; the ridiculously over-the-top moments are easily the series' high-points. Every TV show should begin with the cast shouting the overly-long episode title at the top of their lungs. The million secret passages scattered throughout the school are a nice touch, and the character of “Big Boss”, a regular joe who somehow convinced AEGIS he has superpowers, is hilarious. But things aren't quite kitschy enough, and when the tone gets more serious Gatekeepers becomes just another action anime. The 1969 setting is a largely wasted comedic opportunity; there's really no reason the show couldn't take place in the present day. Where are the Godzilla and Gigantor jokes?

Artistically Gatekeepers is pretty solid. Keiji Gotoh draws round-eyed anime babes like no one can (visually and thematically the show is very similar to Nadesico), and the CG vehicles blend nicely into their cartoonish surroundings. The only weak spot are the villains: Kaiser Kikai and Count Akuma look and sound like rejects from Giant Robo's Big Fire, and the Invader drones all bear an uncanny resemblance to Vinny the Robot from Spaceballs. The animation quality is average for a Studio Gonzo production, and the music is your typical late-90s anime soundtrack. Another chance to make use of the vintage backdrop with a campy retro score is lost on the bouncy techno theme song and bombastic incidental music.

That said, the stories are deftly executed and the characters are well-developed, even if they are largely archetypes. Shun, Ruriko, and Kaoru are your run-of-the-mill anime love-triangle, and Reiko appears to be the long-lost cousin of Excel Saga's Hatchan. But the show finds ample room to humanize its cast in these episodes and still gear things up for the impending series finale. Reiji is revealed to be the Dark Gatekeeper, no surprise since he's standing with the villains in the opening credits, but the subsequent actions he takes are a welcome twist in an otherwise predictable story. Sandwiched between the two episodes detailing his plot is a character-centric installment in which the entire team goes to Shun's house for the New Year. The interpersonal highjinks that ensue are again typical anime material, but it's the kind of stuff that endears the cast to the audience and separates good anime from bad.

And somehow, at the center of it are the three boys and their family secrets: the experiments of Masayuki's father, the events that haunt Makoto's ghostly mother, and of course the long-ago kidnapping of Taro and his sister. As they use their newfound abilities to investigate, young priestess Miyako is drawn into the vortex of events, prompting Taro and his friends to make a stand in both the real and spirit worlds.

Given the talent overlap and focus on alternate realities, it's hard to resist comparisons between Ghost Hound and Nakamura and Konaka's first collaboration, Lain. In many ways Lain represents the potential that Ghost Hound never quite realizes. Rather than explain itself, Lain remained unknowable to the end, a jigsaw puzzle that no matter how assembled always had a few extra pieces and a few missing ones. Which was exactly its tantalizing charm. You could assemble and reassemble the series forever and never get the same picture twice. Ghost Hound has only one solution (okay maybe two), and as the explanation for the concurrence of events is basically "it's a coincidence," the picture it forms isn't as interesting as perhaps it should be. Still, assembling it is a lot of fun, and when half-solved it can be quite eerie.

So when it becomes apparent that the series is aiming for something suspiciously similar to an action climax, there's good reason to be wary. And when it breaks out the maiden-rescuing derring-do (and cross-dressing), wariness turns to outright disappointment. Resorting to a plot device that was old when villains twirled their mustaches and tied heroes' sweethearts to railroad tracks is a sharp deviation from the series' general intelligence, and it can't help but draw attention to some of the climactic episodes' other shortcomings. The series' air of uneasy uncertainty lifts as its conclusion nears and it tries too hard to explain everything. In the stark light of that lifting plot lines are revealed to be less related and science and religion less seamlessly married than they seemed. It reveals a show that, ultimately, is less than the sum of its intellectual parts.
